Local opinion: Driving change through community project funding

In the grand theater of democracy, each of us plays a crucial role — not as passive spectators, but as active participants shaping the course of our collective destiny.

One meaningful way we all can participate in our representative form of government is through a federal program most people probably haven’t heard of — Community Project Funding. Simply put, this relatively new program is where the aspirations of local communities converge with the resources of our nation. Community Project Funding is a program that allows for the allocation of federal funds to specific projects in local communities. These projects are identified by local leaders to address critical needs such as infrastructure improvements, healthcare facilities, or education programs.

Local leaders then submit their project proposals to their members of Congress, who run them through a vetting process, prioritize them, and ultimately advocate for them among their colleagues in Washington. Not every project makes the cut and community support is key. Although the program has only been in place since 2021, it has become a reliable and popular mechanism to ensure our government is responsive to local needs. Community Project Funding is where the voices of our neighborhoods can resonate in the corridors of power. The rationale behind it is simple: local leaders know better than bureaucrats in Washington the needs of their communities, and this process allows congressional representatives to advocate for these needs directly.

Southeastern Arizona has benefited from two congressmen who definitely see the value in Community Project Funding. And we should be grateful for their efforts.

Thanks to Congressman Ciscomani’s efforts, 13 transformative Community Funding Projects valued at more than $26 million were recently given the green light. They range from the relatively small — a 3D crime scanner for the Marana Police Department — to significant road improvement projects in Pima, Pinal, and Cochise counties. A rural hospital in Willcox and volunteer fire department in the small town of Pima are also among the projects that will be funded. One project, however, truly stands out: the $2.7 million Congressman Ciscomani fought for and secured for Pima JTED. This project is more than just an expansion of facilities – it represents an investment in the future. By enhancing programs in heavy equipment operation, construction technology, and bioscience, Congressman Ciscomani’s efforts will shape the trajectory of countless young lives, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Thanks to Congressman Grijalva’s efforts, over $33 million has been allocated to fund 15 projects throughout Congressional District 7. These funds have been used for various purposes such as affordable housing, repairs to a police station in Douglas, Arizona, and workforce development programs for Pima Community College.

Whether it’s roads that connect us or schools that inspire us, Congressman Ciscomani and Congressman Grijalva are champions of the causes that define our quality of life. The value of this cannot be overstated. When we inject funds into infrastructure or education, we’re stimulating local economies. New roads and a skilled workforce attract businesses, foster entrepreneurship, and drive innovation.

And as stewards of our communities, it is incumbent upon us not only to address the needs of today but to lay the groundwork for the generations that follow. The investments Congressman Ciscomani and Congressman Grijalva are bringing to Arizona’s Congressional Districts through the Community Project Funding program are not just about addressing today’s needs. They are vital engines for economic growth.
