A local literacy organization has received almost a half-million dollars to help students and families in the Sunnyside Unified School District.
Literacy Connects will use the $487,000 grant to pay for a three-year project to improve literacy and language skills for children, adults and families who live in the school district.
The organization received the grant from the Helios Education Foundation.
Literacy Connects officials hope to improve the reading skills and scores of students in district elementary schools, encourage greater involvement of parents in their children’s and their own education, and develop better connections between school and community organizations.
The grant will integrate all the organization’s programs: Literacy Volunteers of Tucson, Reach Out and Read, Reading Seed and Stories That Soar!

The grant will also allow the project to provide remedial and enrichment services, such as tutoring and after-school activities, to people of all ages who live in the district.
