Three southern Arizona students have each received $3,500 diversity scholarships from Cox to continue their education.
This year’s Tucson-area recipients are:
- Ana Fernandez, a graduate of St. Augustine Catholic High School, who is attending the University of Arizona.
In 2019, Fernandez and her older sister emigrated from Mexico. This fall Fernandez plans to begin a double major in medical studies and public health with a minor in Spanish.
- Lena Nguyen, a graduate of University High School, who will attend Duke University.
Nguyen is a first-generation college student. She plans to double major in economics and public policy.
- Sophia Rosa, a graduate of Buena High School, who will attend Arizona State University.

Rosa, the daughter of a military veteran, plans to double major in environmental engineering and chemistry.
Statewide, Cox awarded a total of $35,000 to ten deserving students.
Teachers receive Green Fields alumni funds
Green Fields Country Day School (1934-2019) was the oldest independent K-12 day school in Arizona.
To continue its legacy in serving the Tucson community, nearly $75,000 was raised from Green Fields alumni, former faculty and parents upon its closing in 2019. The money is used to award a total of $2,400 annually to eight teachers in the Flowing Wells School District, chosen by their colleagues as the “Teacher of the Year” for their school.
The monetary gifts were given last month to the following teachers:
- Laguna Elementary School: Emily Northrop
- Homer Davis Elementary School: Laura Pina
- Richardson Elementary School: Amee Legarra
- Hendricks Elementary School: Stephen Ambuehl
- Douglas Elementary School: Erika Tornberg
- Centennial Elementary School: Kelli Quinn
- Flowing Wells Junior High School: Wendy Nogami
- Flowing Wells High School: Caitlyn Ferell
HopSkipDrive to launch in Tucson
HopSkipDrive, a transportation technology company, will launch in Tucson for the 2024-2025 academic school year.
It offers local school districts a new option to supplement school buses and existing transportation options for students.
HopSkipDrive works with more than 10,000 schools around the country, helping with local bus driver shortages, budget pressures and other issues.
Early childhood education franchise to open
Lightbridge Academy, an early childhood education franchise, is set to open four locations to Tucson, under the ownership of Tucsonans Vee and Paul Patel.
Lightbridge Academy offers early education and child care programs to children aged six weeks through kindergarten.
It has more than 150 centers either open or in development in several states.
