In recent days, GOP Senator Jake Hoffman has unveiled a jaw-dropping assault on Arizona’s transportation future. His proposition threatens to strangle the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) with absurd conditions, effectively holding the agency hostage to his antiquated worldview. This isn’t just misguided; it’s a dangerous regression that threatens to stunt Arizona’s growth and innovation for generations.
Hoffman’s most egregious demand is a provision aimed at sabotaging any prospect of a commuter rail system in Arizona. He contends that “the people do not want” such a system. But let me offer a retort: As a resident of Tucson, I can confidently say that many of us do.
The grind on the I-10, once a straight-shot journey, has morphed into stop-and-go traffic bottlenecks. It feels like every trip to Phoenix, (my commute is once or twice a week), is a struggle against traffic congestion. As I sit on the I-10 I’m envious of other states, countries and continents that have effectively harnessed rail. Each and every trip to Phoenix I wish Arizona leaders had the foresight to invest into passenger rail decades ago.

Contrary to Hoffman’s outdated beliefs, investing in passenger rail is not just a relic of the past; it’s a forward-thinking solution to our modern transportation challenges. In the same way 100-year-old inventions, like electricity, phones, or medical breakthroughs like insulin have revolutionized our lives, rail has transformed communities for the better. With advancements in technology, speed and car share services at each station, passenger rail can catalyze private investment and drive sustainable growth in the regions it serves.
The efficacy of rail as a sustainable mode of transportation is indisputable. Just as electricity revolutionized our homes, rail has the potential to transform Arizona for the better. With advancements like self-driving technology and integrated transportation services, the allure of rail has never been stronger. By investing in rail, we attract private capital, foster economic growth, and mitigate the environmental impact of our transportation habits.
But the assault doesn’t stop at rail. This proposal seeks to shackle ADOT from implementing crucial measures to combat climate change and adapt to evolving transportation needs.
Prohibiting ADOT from reducing carbon emissions, building electric vehicle charging infrastructure, or even considering motor vehicle travel mile reduction plans is not just short-sighted; it’s reckless.
This draconian mindset reeks of 20th-century thinking, out of touch with the realities of a rapidly evolving world. By handcuffing ADOT to archaic policies, Hoffman and his cohorts risk relegating Arizona to the backwaters of innovation. Instead of embracing progress, they cling to a bygone era, tarnishing Arizona’s reputation as a beacon of forward-thinking leadership.
This narrow-minded approach doesn’t just endanger the present; it imperils the future of Arizona’s transportation infrastructure. By obstructing initiatives aimed at combating climate change and adapting to emerging transportation demands, he not only hampers progress but also jeopardizes the state’s ability to thrive in an increasingly volatile world.
The consequences of climate change are no longer distant threats but immediate realities, evident in the rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and escalating natural disasters plaguing our state. To ignore these challenges and hamstring efforts to mitigate their impact is a dereliction of duty.
What Arizona needs is not regressive posturing but visionary policymaking rooted in data-driven analysis and a commitment to the common good.
Rather than stifling ADOT with nonsensical constraints, we should empower the agency to leverage cutting-edge technology, federal funding and strategic planning to meet the transportation challenges of tomorrow.
In the face of Hoffman’s assault on progress, let’s stand firm in our demand for a transportation system that serves the needs of all Arizonans. Let’s reject the politics of regression and embrace a future where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Our state’s future depends on it.
