Since 2005, if you have an alternative fuel vehicle (all-electric, hybrid, hydrogen, compressed natural gas, etc.) you've been entitled to a special Arizona license plate (blue with three white clouds) that allows you to drive alone - anytime - in a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane.
It's been a great incentive to help clean the air.
Under federal law [23 USC 166(b)(4)], that HOV lane privilege for alt-fuel vehicles expires after Sept. 30, 2025, just a few weeks from now.
Wouldn't it be a breath of fresh air for Arizona's congressional delegation to come together, lead the way, and encourage other U.S. Senators and Representatives across the nation to extend this exemption, perhaps indefinitely?
Why they set an expiration date in the first place is beyond me. Did they think air pollution was going to miraculously go away on its own?
