I have an old cathode ray tube computer monitor that needs disposal. Cathode ray monitors and TVs contain four to six pounds of lead. I'd like to be responsible and dispose of the monitor properly, rather than just throwing it in the garbage. I've called local recycling centers and toxic waste centers. They either won't take the monitor, or will only take it if I pay a $25 fee.
There must be thousands of monitors/TVs like this in local homes. Charging a fee will discourage most people from proper disposal. The result will be thousands of pounds of lead in our landfills, and eventually in our underground water. Rather than charging fees, wouldn't it be better to encourage proper disposal by having toxic waste centers accept them for free and deal with them appropriately?
