I was surprised, appalled, that Governor Hobbs will not oppose I-11. ADOT's proposed highway through the Avra Valley is destructive, expensive and unnecessary for the southern Arizona section of the CanaMex corridor.
I-10 from Tucson to Phoenix is the ONLY significant stretch of 6-lane highway from Sonora's Guaymas-San Carlos container port on through northern Nevada. The rest of the CanaMex I-11 corridor is 4-lane. Tucson's existing 6-lanes should suffice for years.
I-11 would destroy the Tucson Mountains, the Avra Valley, parks, wildlife corridors - so much we worked years to protect. The CAP's open canal, a critical part of Tucson's water supply, would be exposed to contamination from exhaust, fuel spills, development of roadside businesses. Pressure would build to widen Gates Pass Road, the most direct route to Tucson's city center.
I-11 should be taken off ADOT's "drawing board", trashed, for good.
