A suite of recently updated databases on StarNet offers Tucson-area parents great options for comparing schools.
On Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Education released two annual reports: AZ Learns and Adequate Yearly Progress.
AZ Learns evaluates schools' performance based on standardized test scores, measure of academic progress, graduation/dropout rates, and English-language-learner success rates. The number of those receiving the highest label of excelling has fallen by 31 percent year over year.
The Adequate Yearly Progress report is a one-year snapshot of student performance evaluating AIMS scores, percent of students assessed, and attendance and graduation rates. The number of schools in Arizona that made AYP was 71 percent - down 3 percent from last year.

With the school year approaching, it's also a good time to revisit the Star's annual survey of private, charter and magnet schools.
The annual survey, published in January, is a useful tool for parents weighing educational options for their children.
