Applications for those interested in running for school district governing board seats are now available in the Pima County School Superintendent's Office.
Governing board elections will be held in 17 school districts across Pima County, with a total of 45 seats up for grabs in the Nov. 6 general election.
The filing period begins July 9 and ends Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.
To run, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
• Be 18 years or older.
• Be a U.S. citizen, an Arizona resident and registered to vote.
• Be a resident of the school district for one year immediately preceding the day of election.
• No district employee or spouse of a district employee may be a member of the governing board.

• Immediate family members who have shared the same household within four years prior are ineligible to be simultaneous candidates for nomination for the same school district if the governing board has five members.
Incumbents will automatically receive an election packet in the mail. Challengers can pick up a packet at 130 W. Congress St. on the fourth floor, or arrange to have it sent by mail by calling 740-8451 or emailing ricky.hernandez@schools.pima.gov
The Office of the Pima County School Superintendent - in collaboration with the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce - is also conducting a free candidate academy on April 21 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for those interested in running.
The academy will be at Pima Community College's Community Campus, 401 N. Bonita Ave.
Participants will hear from various community leaders and politicians on various topics.
