Roughly 1,400 student projects were displayed and judged in the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair, which wrapped up this week at the Tucson Convention Center.
Almost 30 percent of the projects received awards, including certificates, monetary prizes, trophies and scholarships.
Two individual high school projects and one team effort won the big prize: an all-expenses paid trip to go to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which features about 1,500 high school students from 40 countries in the world's largest international science competition for high school students.
Winning works there not only get national recognition, but students sometimes get patents, computers or large cash prizes.
One gifted eighth-grader also will go to the fair, held May 10-15 in Reno, Nevada, but just to observe in preparation for next year.
