The 39th Annual High School Shakespeare Competition was held March 2 in the Tornabene Theatre at the University of Arizona.
Eighteen students from several southern Arizona high schools competed to win an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for the 41st National English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare competition April 15 at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre at Lincoln Center.
More than 80 friends, family, and educators cheered and supported the student actors while a panel of judges evaluated the performances, choosing the winner that will travel to NYC this spring.
Luz Adriana Batista, a senior at Marana High School, won first place. Charles Palmer, a senior at Empire High School, was the second-place winner.
The competition is sponsored by the Tucson Branch of the English-Speaking Union, a non-political group dedicated to the advancement of global peace and understanding through education and the arts.

Sahuarita student named poetry finalist
Isabel Teran has been named the Arizona Poetry Out Loud National Finalist.
Teran is a junior at Sahuarita High School and competed alongside eight fellow high school participants who represented schools across the state. Teran will go on to compete in the National Finals, which will be held April 30-May 2 in Washington, D.C., for a chance at the National Championship and a $20,000 award.
Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students that begins in the classroom and culminates in the National Finals.
The Arizona Poetry Out Loud State Finals were held March 2 at Northern Arizona University’s International Pavilion in Flagstaff.
CPLC seeks teacher nominations
Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) is seeking nominations from across the state for this year’s Esperanza Latino Teacher Awards honoring the impact Latino teachers have on their students.
Awardees will receive a $5,000 cash award and a $2,500 grant for their school.
To be nominated, educators must be full-time teachers and spend more than 50% of the time directly teaching students. The awards are open to any PreK-12 grade teacher in any content area. Nominees must have at least six full years as a fully accredited classroom teacher, have taught the last three years in Arizona, and plan to continue in active teaching status through the 2024-2025 school year.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 29 and can be downloaded at www.cplc.org and submitted via email to cathy.keppel@cplc.org.
Marana students awarded scholarships
Marana Schools 2340 Foundation has announced 11 graduating Marana Unified School District seniors who were selected to receive a 2340 Scholarship for $2,500. A total of $27,500 in scholarships were awarded to Marana students.
Award recipients have attended MUSD from kindergarten through 12th grade and demonstrated excellence in academics, extracurricular activities and community service. Students, their families and a favorite MUSD teacher will be recognized at a luncheon on March 29.t
