History teacher garners top award
A Tucson teacher has been named the Arizona American History Teacher of the Year.
Kate Gilbert teaches eighth-grade social studies at Safford Engineering/Technology Magnet Middle School.
She received the award Oct. 14.
Gilbert has taught at Safford for 17 years, with the exception of a tour in the Peace Corps.
She was recognized because of her creative, innovative approach to American history.
Cele Peterson, Angel Charity recognized
The Educational Enrichment Foundation honored Cele Peterson and the Angel Charity for Children Inc. on Thursday during its 11th annual Ray Davies Lifetime Humanitarian Achievement Award Luncheon.

Peterson has worked to improve the community since 1931 when she opened Cele Peterson's dress shop. Since then, she founded the Tucson Children's Museum, was a co-founder of Casa de los Niños and was involved with the beginnings of the Arizona Theater Company and the Tucson Opera Company.
The Angel Charity for Children Inc. was founded in 1982 to improve the lives of children. In the past 26 years, it has raised more than $19 million, benefiting 50 agencies that help children.
The Educational Enrichment Foundation was established as a support organization for the Tucson Unified School District. Its focus is on addressing student and teacher needs at their most basic levels by providing shoes, eye exams, glasses, hearing aids and clothing.
The EEF also awards scholarships to students and grants to teachers.
Higher-ed group honors Sunnyside
The Sunnyside Unified School District's Digital Advantage Program is receiving state recognition.
The district has been given the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education's 2009 Pathways to Higher Education Award.
The award recognizes outstanding college-access programs that prepare, encourage and retain students.
MLK poster-essay contest seeks entries
Arizona students in kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to participate in Arizona State University's Martin Luther King Jr. essay-poster contest.
Winners will receive savings bonds and have their entries displayed at ASU.
Students must create their "Beyond the Dream" entries around the theme of building communities through leadership.
Essays or poems must be 250 words or less. Winning posters will be made into bookmarks, so they need to be oblong in shape.

Credit union offering scholarships, grants
First Credit Union will be awarding three college scholarships to graduating Arizona high school seniors.
The scholarships, worth $500 each, will be issued for the 2010-2011 school year.
Applications are due Dec. 31.
Eligible students must enroll in a full-time course of study at an Arizona college, university or vocational school. Applicants must also be a First Credit Union member.

The credit union is also awarding three grants to Arizona educators and other community organizations to assist in teaching financial education.
The deadline for the $250-grants is also Dec. 31. Grant applications and information can be found on the same Web site.
Shoe giveaway set for needy students
The Gordon Foundation and Payless ShoeSource will partner to provide a free new pair of shoes to elementary and middle school students in need from the Sunnyside Unified School District.
Next week, the students will be taken to one of two Payless ShoeSource stores to select a pair of shoes.
Hudlow plans 50-year celebration Nov. 19
Current and former students, staff and parents are invited to Hudlow Elementary School's 50th anniversary celebration.
The celebration will be Nov. 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 502 N. Caribe Ave.
There will be cake, hula-hooping and an opportunity to see the school.
