I read with interest the 27% annual salary increase for Pima County Administrator Jan Lesher, which was approved recently by the County Board. I worked in county government in Minnesota for most of my career, mostly in management positions. Never have I seen a 27% annual increase for any position. Either increases were stagnant for several years, or, if an increase was authorized, 2 to 3% was the norm. No wonder low-wage and middle-class wage earners are angry. Data reveals that over the last 4 to 5 years the average wage increase for low to middle income workers was between 4 and 5 percent. In 2024, the average Pima County employee average total salary increase was 3.6%. How is a 27% increase justified without a performance review that includes measurable goals and objectives?
While Ms. Lesher’s public service may be highly valued by the County Board, her exorbitant salary increase is simply unjustified.
