Local high school student-athletes have spent the last few weeks competing at the highest level in their respective sports at the AIA state championships. From first-time state titles to making a comeback, here’s how Southern Arizona high schools fared at this year’s spring state tournament.

Just take Ironwood Ridge’s Jett Merrill, for example. The high school junior took home two first-place finishes and a second-place finish at this year’s state tournament.
Merrill placed first in the 110m hurdles event with a time of 13.91 and in the long jump event with a mark of 7.21m.

The No. 2 Bobcats advanced past No. 15 Maricopa, No. 7 Independence and No. 3 Campo Verde to the championship round.
In the 4A conference, Salpointe Catholic made a deep run in the tournament, advancing all the way to the semifinals. But the No. 4 Lancers were ultimately defeated by No. 1 ALA - Gilbert North, 3-1.
Beach volleyball
Ironwood Ridge was the only Tucson-area high school to qualify for the girls beach volleyball state tournament this season.
The No. 8 Nighthawks advanced to the quarterfinals of the team tournament but were eliminated by No. 1 Flagstaff, 4-1, on April 22.
But Ironwood Ridge’s state tournament run didn’t end there.
