Arizona football training camp notes, practice 15: Noah Fifita, UA offense execute two-minute drill

Due to a nearby monsoon storm, the Wildcats started practice at the Davis Sports Center, then moved over to under the lights of Casino Del Sol Stadium for the second half of practice.

In one of the final periods of Sunday’s practice, the Wildcats worked on clock management and ran a two-minute drill.

Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita was 5 for 5 passing, completing four first-down throws to wide receivers Tre Spivey (thrice) and Chris Hunter. Fifita also completed a pass to wide receiver Giovanni Richardson. Arizona’s offense moved down the field to set up kicker Michael Salgado-Medina for a 37-yard field goal.

In an earlier period, Fifita stayed patient in the pocket and right as the UA pass rush closed the pocket, Fifita dotted a pass to Richardson near the sideline for a 13-yard gain.

In the first team period to open practice, Fifita was 3 for 4 passing, with the only incompletion being a drop by running back Kedrick Reescano on a swing pass. Fifita threw a deep ball to Richardson on the same drive.

It was a productive day at the office for Arizona’s QB1.

Here are other notes and observations from Sunday night at Davis Sports Center and Casino Del Sol Stadium:

* Punter and Australia native Chase Ridley continues to have a strong training camp. Ridley consistently boomed punts 50-plus yards and had a couple of punts in the 60-yard range. Ridley also pinned back-to-back punts on the opposing side’s 8-yard line in a “coffin corner” drill.

* Arizona’s starting defense on Sunday had Tre Smith, Kaisi Lafitaga and Mays Pese on the defensive line, with Chase Kennedy, Taye Brown and Georgetown transfer Cooper Blomstrom at linebacker, and Jay’Vion Cole, Gavin Hunter, walk-on Quinn Olson, Nebraska transfer Malcolm Hartzog and Charlotte transfer Dwight Bootle II. Smith and Bootle combined for a sack.

* Memphis transfer linebacker Everett Roussaw broke up Fifita’s pass over the middle on third down.

* Freshman receiver R.J. Mosley had two notable catches, including a diving catch with a defender in coverage. Mosley dove inwards and hauled in a pass from backup quarterback Sawyer Anderson, with Cole in coverage.

* Anderson threw an interception to Cole to end practice.

* Arizona will now move into its final batch of training camp practices before starting Week 1 prep for Northern Arizona.
